Top 5 pizzas in London

London is a huge city, with plenty of alternatives for restaurants of every typology and nationality to choose from.

When we moved here it had been quite difficult to choose one restaurant instead of the other, even using Tripadvisor, because a lot of them are actually really well rated.

Of course, since the beginning we have never been too picky, and we have tried to experience new tastes and different typologies of cuisines from all over the world, but.. I have to say.. sometimes Italians really miss a really good pizzas, and, after more than one year living in London, we can actually suggest you some really good places where to have a good and REAL ITALIAN PIZZA.

Here I am gonna list my top 5 pizzas in London, the places where I go more often, but the choice on their classification has been quite hard in some cases.

NUMBER 5: PIZZICOTTO, high street kensington

We have visited this Italian restaurant about a week ago, after having heard a lot about it.

my rating:

The place has a simple design, warm and welcoming.

The QUALITY of the food is high, and the service is very good, polite and friendly, so, my compliments for that!!

Not a huge variety of pizzas on the menu, but this is compensated with the very good quality, and attention to detail. In addition, they offer also other traditional Italian dishes in the menu. We tried the mix of Italian salami to share before the pizza, and it was amazing! The only bug is the salame that is ways too thin. Salame "has to stand", as they say in my place (eheheh).

An extremely positive detail is the restaurant's partnership with Slow Food UK, committed to promote the protection of the community and the environment.

The only reason why it is at the fifth place is the PRICE. We have found the final price quite high, compared to the other restaurants that I am gonna put on this list. In particular, what has made the difference was the coffee (2.50£) and the amaro (5£), a bit overpriced, compared to the rest.

Overall I really recommend this restaurant for a casual dinner with friends, but not if you wanna have a very low budget night!

number 4: cacciari's, pembroke

my rating:

The place is not really big, and the fact that from your table you can see the chefs preparing your pizza is definitely an added value.

The pizzas are quite big, but thin. It is not for you if you are looking for the classic Napolitan thick pizza, bus it is really, really good, like we eat it in the north of Italy!

The choice of toppings is great, from the classic "Margherita" to the "Hawajana" that creates so many fights between the traditionalists and the innovators.

Also available two different calzoni: folded pizza filled in with delicious ingredients.

For what concerns the QUALITY of the products I have been very impressed. Fresh ingredients mixed together to create the traditional recipes of Emilia Romagna, a region in the north of Italy. All he ingredients are imported directly from Italy, a part from fish, meat, vegetables and fruit, that, for obvious reasons, would loose their freshness during their transportation.

The PRICE is absolutely in line with the quality of the food and the service: from 8,50 to 14,50 pounds for the pizzas, according to the toppings you choose.

number 3: arancina, notting hill gate

Arrived in London in 2006, this is one of my favourite pizzas, in my top 3 of all the pizza places I have tried in more than one year in this city.

The place is quite small, just with some seats on the top floor, but it is absolutely perfect for a take-away, a delivery or an afternoon/night "snack".

MY RATING:

If you like toppings, this is for sure your place. You can choose from slices of pizza, paletta or pala, according to how much you wanna eat. For one person I suggest a paletta. A pala, instead, is slightly less than a double paletta, so make your decision according to how much you wanna eat and see what is more convenient for you.

Every typology of pizza is filled in with a big quantity of toppings, very good sign of attention to QUALITY and generosity.

The PRICE is not bad for a pizza, also considering that the most expensive things on a pizza are the topping, and in those ones they are really generous.

number 2: pappagone, finsbury park

MY RATING:

Very cozy, casual and relaxing environment. The staff is all Italian and the pizza is cooked in a wooden oven, like the tradition wants ;)

The reason it is on the second place of my list is because it is a very big pizza, that you can choose from a very long list. The toppings are mainly in the Italian style, but some of them are actually really particular and different from the traditional ones, still respecting the Italian traditions and ingredients.

The QUALITY is really high, and despite the quantity of the toppings on the pizza, I have found it not heavy at all to digest, really good sign that the dough is well fermented and the ingredients have been cooked properly.

PRICE absolutely in line with London's restaurants, also for what concerns the beverages and the deserts.

P.S.: if you go there you have to save some room in your stomach for the ice cream!!! It's HUGE and really, really good!! They also have ice cream/cocktails that are fabulous! Trust me ;)

Okay guys, it's time for my favourite pizza in London... are you ready to find out the number one of my list?

Let's scroll down!

number 1: zia lucia, holloway

Wait Nicole, what's wrong with the pizza on the left?? Why is it black?? Is it burnt??

No guys, this is the most particular thing about this place. They prepare four different types of doughs:

  • Vegetable charcoal (the black one in the picture): the mail characteristic is that it is extremely easy to digest and it helps to absorb the gas in your stomach, thanks to the characteristic of the vegetable charcoal.

  • Wholemeal

  • Gluten free

  • Traditional

Each of those doughs goes through a 48 hours fermentation process, that makes the pizza really light and easy to digest, and is cooked in a wooden oven, that you can see in the middle of the restaurant, creating a really particular atmosphere (see the following picture).

MY RATING:

For what concerns the QUALITY, as I explained before, the particularity of this restaurant is that you have four different doughs to choose from, that makes a huge difference with all the other restaurants that I mentioned before. Not only there are different types of doughs, but there are also a lot of different toppings, according to the Italian tradition, with an additional "special of the week" with seasonal ingredients.

A great attention is given to each of the toppings, starting from the tomato sauce, that is often underestimated, but it makes a big difference! In fact, it is really tasty and it really reminds me of home.

The PRICES are surprisingly quite low, considering the very high quality and compared to the rest of the pizzas in London. This is a very valid reason to order the dessert too ;)

Overall, in my opinion, this is the best pizza I ever had in London (and I have tried a lot of them). It is located quite far from the centre of the city, but it really worths a visit.

RESERVATIONS:

The only "flaw" of this restaurant is that they do not accept reservations if you are less than 8 people. The rule is "First comes, first served". If you do not have a reservation you might have to wait in a queue in front of the restaurant, but it really worths the wait, trust me! My suggestion is to go there in less busy times, like 7pm, in order to have more chances to find a table available for you.

And... no guys, the real Italian pizza doesn't have chicken on top. NEVER.
